Christ Dwells in the Believer’s Heart
Paul prayed: “That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.” Ephesians 3:17 This does not mean that Christ physically lives inside the bodily organ. It means that through the Holy Spirit, Christ makes His presence, rule, character, and life at home within the believer.
God pours His love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5). He shines the knowledge of Christ into our hearts (2 Corinthians 4:6). He sends the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” (Galatians 4:6).
The Christian life is not merely an outward imitation of Jesus. It is the life of Christ being formed and expressed within us.
We Must Guard the Heart
Because the heart influences the entire direction of life, Scripture says: “Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life.” Proverbs 4:23
Guarding the heart does not mean becoming emotionally closed, suspicious, or distant. It means paying careful attention to what is shaping our inner life. We guard the heart by receiving God’s Word, rejecting lies, confessing sin, forgiving others, resisting bitterness, renewing our minds, examining our motives, and staying sensitive to the Holy Spirit.
What we repeatedly watch, hear, believe, rehearse, and desire will influence the condition of our heart.
## A Biblical Definition of the Heart
When the Bible speaks of the heart, it usually means: The deepest inward center of the person—the hidden self from which thoughts, beliefs, understanding, desires, emotions, motives, choices, words, actions, faith, and moral character proceed.
The heart is the person as he or she truly is before God. This is why the greatest commandment is: “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart.” Matthew 22:37
God does not merely desire outward conformity. He desires us. He desires our thoughts, affections, motives, choices, loyalties, desires, and entire inward life. The good news of the new covenant is that God does not merely command us to change our hearts. Through Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit, He gives us a new heart and continues transforming us from within.
A Prayer
Father, search my heart and reveal anything within me that does not agree with Your truth. Expose every lie, wrong desire, hidden motive, bitterness, fear, pride, and unbelief.
Give me an undivided heart that loves You, trusts You, and responds to Your voice. Heal the places within me that are wounded, soften the places that have become hardened, and strengthen the places that are weak.
Write Your truth upon my heart. Let the life and character of Jesus be formed within me. May my thoughts, desires, words, decisions, and actions flow from a heart that belongs fully to You.
